Tick formed in London in the late 1990s with Matt Willis on vocals and guitar, James Bourne on bass, Scott Francis on drums, and Chris Bell on keyboards. Their debut album came out in 2001, and the song 'All With Love' from it did well on both UK and US charts.
Willis and Bourne wrote most of the lyrics, which had a direct, unvarnished quality. Other tracks like 'Bum Hated' and 'Hungry Feelings' showed the same straightforward approach. In 2003, the band got tangled in a plagiarism lawsuit that drew a lot of attention.
After that legal situation was settled, their sound shifted on later records, bringing in more electronic and folk touches alongside the rock. They kept putting out music, including songs like 'Like a Dead Star' and 'My Friends'.
