Tico Santa Cruz was born Ricardo Cruz de Almeida in 1970. He grew up in a musical household where his father, a sambista, gave him an early feel for rhythm. As a teenager, he got into rock bands like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC.
In 1997, he co-founded Detonautas Roque Clube with three friends. Their self-titled debut album came out in 2002 and included the single "Quem É Você." Over time, the band's sound picked up touches of funk, reggae, and electronics.
Some of his solo tracks include "Clareiras," "Foda-se Song," and "O Morro Mandou Avisar." He also recorded a version of "O Tempo Não Para" with Claudia Leitte.
