Tiger Hu formed in the late 1980s as a group of musicians interested in traditional Chinese folk music. They started with limited resources and few places to perform, but kept working at it. Their lineup included Yang Jin on vocals and dulcimer, Liu Li on erhu and vocals, Chen Yongqiang on guzheng, Wang Peng on pipa, and Zheng Pengfei on percussion.
They put out albums like Tiger Hu in 1995, Wild Wind in 1999, Border Ballad in 2003, The Spirit of the Frontier in 2006, and Song of the Homeland in 2009. These records often dealt with themes of love, loss, and human experience, using traditional Chinese music as their foundation.
In 2006, Tiger Hu performed their song "Zhen Bian Ren" on the CCTV New Year's Gala. That performance brought them wider attention. Their approach to folk music sometimes drew criticism from traditionalists, but it also found an audience.
Their version of "Zhen Bian Ren" became particularly well-known. The song is about frontier guards, and Tiger Hu's arrangement gave it a place in contemporary Chinese music.
