Background notes

Archive material and source history

Tiggi Hawke formed in Los Angeles in 1966 with members including Fred Neil, Richie Furay, and Jim Messina. Their sound drew from folk, country, and rock, fitting the mood of the late 1960s. They released two studio albums, 'Tiggi Hawke' in 1967 and 'Family of Man' in 1968, before dissolving around 1971.

Their song 'For What It's Worth' came out in 1967 and became widely known as a protest anthem. It was co-written by Fred Neil, who handled lead vocals and songwriting. The band's other tracks include 'Remedy (feat. Cowens Brothers)'.

After Neil left in 1968, the group faced instability. Richie Furay later helped start Poco. Their music, particularly 'For What It's Worth', remains associated with the social unrest of that period.
