Tiken Jah Fakoly was born in 1968 in Divo, Côte d'Ivoire. He started playing music in high school with a band called Ki-Yi M'bock, which translates to The Ants of the Savannah. His first album, "Mangala," came out in 1996 and found an audience in his home country and beyond.
His 1999 song "Is It Because I'm Black" brought him wider attention. The track addresses racism and police brutality, and it became something people recognized internationally. Other songs like "Le pays va mal" and "Africain À Paris" continued this thread of social commentary set to reggae rhythms.
He's released albums like "Cours d'histoire" in 2004, "African Revolution" in 2010, and "Dernier Appel" in 2014. His lyrics about corruption and human rights have sometimes drawn criticism from authorities, but he's kept recording and performing with his band.
