Editor's note

Tim Maia, the rough-voiced soul of Brazil

He mixed samba rhythms with American soul and sang about love in a way that felt direct and unpolished.

For a quick sense of his sound, 'Você Foi a Primeira' has that soulful pull, and 'O Descobridor Dos Sete Mares' shows his knack for a big, sweeping melody. Both feel lived-in, like he's just telling you something.

Tim Maia's voice carried everything, a little rough and completely his own. He took inspiration from James Brown and Otis Redding, but songs like 'Você Foi a Primeira' and 'Azul da Cor do Mar' became Brazilian radio staples because they sounded like him, not an imitation. That mix of samba, soul, and funk gave Brazilian pop a new kind of grit.

He grew up in Rio listening to samba, jazz, and rock 'n' roll, and briefly played with Os Mutantes before going solo. His first album in 1970 opened with the hit 'Gostava Tanto de Você,' and he kept recording through personal troubles, putting out more than twenty albums before his death in 1998.

Archive material and source history

Tim Maia was born Sebastião Rodrigues Maia in Rio de Janeiro in 1942. He grew up listening to samba, jazz, and rock 'n' roll, and later found inspiration in American soul singers like James Brown and Otis Redding. In the 1960s, he briefly played with Os Mutantes before going solo.

His first album came out in 1970, and its opening track, 'Gostava Tanto de Você,' became a hit right away. Other songs like 'Azul da Cor do Mar' and 'O Descobridor Dos Sete Mares' kept his voice on Brazilian radio through the decade. He sang about love and everyday life in a way that felt direct and unpolished.

Maia's personal troubles with drugs and alcohol were well known, and in 1976 he served time for marijuana possession. He kept recording through it all, putting out more than twenty albums before his death in 1998. The music mixed samba rhythms with soul and funk, but it was always his voice that carried it, a little rough, completely his own.
