Timbalê

Timbalê came together in Salvador, Bahia in the early 1990s, with Denny Denan and Carlinhos Brown at the center of the group. Their sound was built around the timbales, those Afro-Cuban hand drums, but they filled it out with congas, surdos, and the single-stringed berimbau. The music had a physical, percussive drive that felt connected to the street rhythms of their city.

Their song "Se For Dá Um Tempo" became a signature piece, one that spoke to the everyday struggles and persistence they saw around them. The lyrics often touched on social issues like poverty and racism, giving the rhythms a grounded, local weight. They weren't just playing beats; they were talking about where those beats came from.

Over time, they worked with other Brazilian artists like Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, and put out albums including "Timbalê" in 1993 and "África Brasil" in 1996. The group's lineup shifted around Denan and Brown, but the core sound, that mix of Bahian percussion and pointed, melodic songwriting, stayed recognizable. They kept playing, bringing that particular Salvador energy to stages well beyond Brazil.
