Timbuk 3

Timbuk 3 formed in Minneapolis in 1983 with Pat MacDonald on vocals and guitar, Barbara Bryan on bass and vocals, and Paul Bryan on drums. Their debut album 'Greetings from Timbuk 3' came out in 1986 and included 'The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades,' which became their best-known song. The track's ironic optimism and simple guitar hook made it an unexpected hit that still gets played decades later.

They followed up with several more albums through the 1990s and 2000s, including 'Edge of Allegiance' in 1989 and 'National Treasure' in 1991. Songs like 'A Sinful Life' and 'Big Shot In The Dark' kept their mix of pop melodies and wry lyrics going, though none matched the commercial reach of their first single. The band's lineup stayed consistent through most of their recording years.

Timbuk 3's music often carried a social edge, with lyrics that commented on politics and culture without losing their catchy appeal. They released eight studio albums total, the last being 'Derelict' in 2011. While 'The Future's So Bright' remains their signature track, their catalog shows a band that kept writing and recording on their own terms long after their moment in the spotlight had passed.
