Tino Rodríguez was born Aquilino José Rodríguez Reyes in Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1938. He started singing with local orchestras there before joining Orquesta Aragüey in 1957, which helped him gain attention beyond his hometown. In 1961 he formed his own band, Tino Rodríguez y su Orquesta.
His song 'Maracaibo Florido' became his most recognizable track, a celebration of his hometown that resonated widely. Rodríguez recorded over 50 albums that mixed Venezuelan rhythms with salsa and other Latin styles, earning him the nickname 'El Faraón de la Salsa'.
In the 1970s, his political views led to a ban from performing in Venezuela for several years. He continued recording and performing until his death in 2009.
