Editor's note

TLC's Atlanta R&B, hip-hop, and pop blend

The trio shaped '90s music with hits like "Waterfalls" and "Unpretty."

If you want the heart of TLC, put on "Waterfalls" and "Unpretty." That's where their message and melody come together cleanly.

TLC's songs tackled real stuff without sugarcoating it. "Waterfalls" warned about chasing dreams that turn dangerous, and "Unpretty" spoke straight to the pressure girls feel about their looks. They made R&B that wasn't just about love songs; it had a streetwise edge and a conscience.

They started in Atlanta in the early '90s with 'Ooooooohhh. On the TLC Tip.' 'CrazySexyCool' in 1994 and 'FanMail' in 1999 cemented their sound. After Left Eye's death in 2002, T-Boz and Chilli kept the name alive with tours and later tracks like "Joy Ride."

TLC formed in Atlanta in the early 1990s with Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. Their debut album 'Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip' came out in 1992, followed by 'CrazySexyCool' in 1994, which included the song "Waterfalls." They recorded "Girl Talk" for their 2002 album '3D.'

Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car accident in 2002. T-Boz has sickle cell anemia. The group's music often dealt with relationships and self-image, like in "Unpretty" from their 1999 album 'FanMail.'

Their sound mixed R&B with hip-hop and pop elements. They won Grammys and had several multi-platinum albums.

After Left Eye's death, T-Boz and Chilli continued performing as TLC. They've done reunion tours and released new music occasionally, including songs like "Way Back" and "Joy Ride."
