Editor's note

Toad The Wet Sprocket's quiet, thoughtful California sound

The Santa Barbara band found their voice on 'Fear' and 'Dulcinea' in the early '90s.

If you want to hear what they were doing at their peak, put on 'Something's Always Wrong' or 'Crazy Life' from 'Dulcinea.' That's the sound that stuck.

When 'Walk on the Ocean' and 'All I Want' started getting radio play in 1991, it wasn't just another alt-rock moment. Glen Phillips's voice gave their songs a particular kind of weight, something you can still hear in 'Don't Fade' or 'Pray Your Gods' years later. They made that quiet, thoughtful sound feel like a real place to land.

They formed in Santa Barbara in 1989 and kept playing shows around California until 'Fear' changed things in 1991. After 'Dulcinea' in 1994, they stopped recording together for a while, but they've played shows on and off since and put out another album in 2009.

Toad the Wet Sprocket formed in Santa Barbara in 1989, with Glen Phillips on vocals and guitar, Todd Nichols on guitar, Dean Dinning on bass, and Randy Guss on drums. Their early recordings didn't catch much attention, but they kept playing shows around California.

Their third album, 1991's 'Fear,' changed things. It had 'Walk on the Ocean' and 'All I Want,' songs that got radio play and made people notice Phillips's voice and the band's quiet, thoughtful sound. They followed it with 'Dulcinea' in 1994, which had 'Something's Always Wrong' and 'Crazy Life.'

After a few more albums, the band stopped recording together for a while. They've played shows on and off since then, and put out another album in 2009. Their songs from the early '90s still turn up on playlists now and then.
