Editor's note

Tokyo Police Club's sharp, restless indie rock

A Canadian band that started in the mid-2000s with wiry, urgent songs and kept evolving.

For their early sound, 'Nature Of The Experiment' is the one. For where they landed later, put on 'I'll Wait'.

They arrived with a specific kind of energy, that fast, jittery guitar line on 'Nature Of The Experiment' felt like a shot of adrenaline in the late-2000s indie scene. The whole 'Elephant Shell' album captured that anxious, clever sound. Even when they smoothed things out later on tracks like 'I'll Wait', there was still that underlying restlessness in the writing.

They formed in Newmarket, Ontario and put out 'Elephant Shell' in 2008, followed by 'Champ' in 2010. After the controversy around the 'Your English Is Good' video in 2011, they kept making records through the 2010s, from 'TPC' in 2018 to 'Poodle' in 2023.

Tokyo Police Club formed in Newmarket, Ontario, with Graham Wright on vocals and guitar, David Monks on guitar and vocals, Josh Hook on bass and vocals, and Greg Alsop on drums. They started releasing music in the mid-2000s, putting out albums like 'Elephant Shell' in 2008 and 'Champ' in 2010.

Their song 'Your English Is Good' became one of their better-known tracks, along with 'Breakneck Speed' and 'Nature Of The Experiment.' In 2011, the video for 'Your English Is Good' drew criticism for how it depicted Asian women, leading the band to apologize and take it down.

They kept making records through the 2010s and into the 2020s, with 'TPC' in 2018 and 'Poodle' in 2023. Outside the band, Wright and Monks worked together as the duo We Are the One, using the name Hanover Leggs.
