Editor's note

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a rock band from Florida

A straightforward rock band with hits like 'Refugee' and 'Don't Do Me Like That'.

If you want to hear what they were about, 'Refugee' and 'Don't Do Me Like That' cover it pretty well. They're just good, no-frills rock songs.

They made songs that stuck around on the radio without much fuss. 'Refugee' is a good example of that, just a solid rock tune with Petty's voice up front. They kept it simple even when they worked with people like Bob Dylan or Stevie Nicks.

They started in Gainesville in the early 1970s and put out their first album in 1976. By the late '70s, records like 'Damn the Torpedoes' had songs people knew by heart. Later on, 'Mary Jane's Last Dance' showed they could still get airplay in the '90s.

Archive material and source history

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers formed in Gainesville, Florida in the early 1970s. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1976, followed by records like 'Damn the Torpedoes' in 1979 and 'Hard Promises' in 1981. Songs like 'American Girl' and 'Refugee' became radio staples, built on straightforward rock arrangements and Petty's nasal, determined vocals.

They worked with other artists occasionally, including Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks, who sang on 'Stop Draggin' My Heart Around'. The band's sound had some country and blues touches at times, but mostly stayed in the realm of guitar-driven rock. 'Mary Jane's Last Dance' came out in 1993 and got heavy airplay, with a video featuring Kim Basinger.

Petty died in 2017. The Heartbreakers included Mike Campbell on lead guitar and Benmont Tench on keyboards for most of the band's run, with Ron Blair and later Howie Epstein on bass.
