Tonic formed in Los Angeles in 1993 with Emerson Hart on vocals and guitar, Jeff Russo on bass, Kevin Shepard on guitar, and Dan Lavery on drums. Their debut album 'Lemon Parade' came out in 1996, and its lead single 'If You Could Only See' became their most recognizable song.
They followed up with albums like 'Sugar' in 1999 and 'Head on Straight' in 2002. Other songs like 'You Wanted More' and 'Open Up Your Eyes' kept them on alternative rock radio through the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In 2004, guitarist Kevin Shepard left the band. They did a reunion tour in 2006, though there were reports of tensions during that period.
