Tonin Muquiça

Tonin Muquiça came up in the 1980s as a Brazilian singer-songwriter from Jequié, Bahia. His debut album 'Som de Alma' arrived in 1985, mixing traditional Brazilian rhythms with blues and rock touches. The song 'Aflição' from 1987 became his most recognized piece, built around spare guitar work and lyrics that leaned into loneliness and despair.

That directness in his writing sometimes drew criticism for being too bleak, but it connected with listeners who appreciated the lack of polish. He kept recording through the 1990s with albums like 'Voz da Terra' and 'Semeador de Alegria', usually working with a small band that included guitarist Luiz Gaúcho and bassist Pedro Sá.

There's a live album from São Paulo in 2002, but the story mostly centers on those earlier records. The music holds a particular kind of regional folk feeling, updated just enough to feel personal rather than revivalist.
