Archive material and source history

Tony Christie was born Anthony Fitzgerald in Yorkshire in 1943. He started playing in local bands as a teenager, and by the early 1960s he'd moved to London and signed with Decca Records.

In 1970, he recorded a song called "Yellow River" that had been written by Iain Robinson and Ray Smith. The track was produced by Roy Davies and became a number one hit in the UK, defining Christie's career for many listeners. It wasn't his only notable song, he also recorded tracks like "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast" and "Island in the Sun."

Christie had some vocal cord issues in the late 1970s that required therapy, but he was able to continue singing. He kept recording music over the following decades, though nothing ever quite matched the immediate impact of "Yellow River."
