Archive material and source history

Tony Sly was the frontman of the punk band No Use for a Name, which he co-founded in 1987 in Orange County when he was 17. The band's 1998 album 'Making Friends' included 'International You Day,' a song that became one of their best-known tracks. Sly's writing often dealt with personal themes, and his vocals had a straightforward, earnest quality that fit the band's melodic punk style.

In the late 1990s, Sly struggled with drug addiction, which led to a break in the band's activity. He eventually got sober and returned to music. His solo work included songs like 'Already Won' and 'Amends,' which continued in a more acoustic, singer-songwriter direction while keeping the direct lyrical approach he was known for.

No Use for a Name remained active through the 2000s, releasing albums on Fat Wreck Chords. Sly also recorded and toured as a solo artist, playing songs that felt more stripped-down and personal. He died in 2012 at age 41.
