Berlin formed in Los Angeles in 1978 with Terri Nunn on vocals and John Crawford on guitar. Their sound had a new wave feel, built around Nunn's voice and Crawford's atmospheric guitar work. In 1986, film producer Jerry Bruckheimer asked them to write a song for the movie Top Gun. They came up with 'Take My Breath Away,' a ballad that matched the film's romantic subplot. The single went to number one worldwide that same year.
That song became so big it sometimes overshadowed the rest of their work. They released other albums like 'Count Three & Pray' in 1987 and 'Voyeur' in 1989. The band's lineup has included bassist Dave Diamond and drummer Chris Olivas alongside Nunn and Crawford. 'Take My Breath Away' has been used in other films and commercials since, keeping it familiar long after the 1980s ended.
