Archive material and source history

Topa formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1998, started by Rodrigo Chagas, Paulo Lourenço, and Felipe Canedo. They built their sound around Afro-Brazilian rhythms and spiritual themes, which sometimes drew criticism early on for mixing religion with music. The band kept at it anyway.

Their 2003 album 'Bençãos de Iemanjá' gave them their best-known song, the title track. Other songs like 'Fui Eu' and 'Lagoa' show their range with soulful melodies and lyrics about love and searching. Over time, the lineup expanded to include Renato Lage on keyboards and Márcio Fonseca on drums.

Topa has worked with artists like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Marisa Monte. They put out albums roughly every few years through 2012, including 'A Lua é Testemunha' in 2006 and 'O Caminho do Sol' in 2009.
