Tops formed in Montreal around 2011, with Jane Penny on vocals and guitar and David Carriere on guitar and vocals. They put out their first album, Tender Opposites, in 2014. Their songs like 'Way to be Loved' and 'I Feel Alive' have a dreamy, atmospheric quality that feels both melodic and a little off-kilter.

They followed that with Picture You Staring in 2017 and I Feel Alive in 2020. The band's sound has a certain introspective pull, built around Penny's voice and arrangements that lean into pop structures without feeling entirely conventional. Their 2023 album is called By the Book.

David Carriere died in 2017. The band kept going after that, and their music has drawn some criticism for being too arty or experimental, though that hasn't shifted their approach much. They're still making records that feel like their own.
