Tortured Conscience formed in New York City around 1983 with Vinnie Stigma on guitar, Raybeez on vocals, Jimmy Gestapo on bass, and James Madrox on drums. They came out of that city's hardcore scene, drawing from the raw sound of British bands like Discharge and Crass. Their first album, 'A New Trend,' came out in 1985.
Their lyrics often dealt with political corruption, police brutality, and urban alienation. Songs like 'Blinded' and 'Crucify' had a confrontational edge that sometimes got them into trouble with venues and authorities. The band's sound was built around distorted guitars, pounding drums, and Raybeez's aggressive vocal delivery.
They put out several albums after that first one, including 'Violence' in 1986 and 'In Your Face' in 1988. The hardcore community took to their relentless live shows and uncompromising stance.
