Toshi was born in Tokyo in 1965 and grew up listening to rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. He joined the metal band X Japan in 1987, where his vocals became a central part of their sound during their rise in the late 80s and early 90s.
In 1991, X Japan released 'Always,' which became their most recognizable song. Toshi's voice on that track and others like 'Sayonara' helped define the band's emotional intensity. He left X Japan in 1997 after a legal dispute with bandleader Yoshiki, and spent several years dealing with personal issues including depression and vocal problems.
He returned to music in the early 2000s with solo work, releasing songs like 'Hana' and 'Kimi Wa Inaika' that showed a different side of his voice. In 2007, he reunited with Yoshiki and X Japan for tours and new recordings.
