Tot Valentino formed in 1999 in Salvador, Bahia, with Guga de Paula on vocals, Gui Almeida on guitar, Leo Brandão on bass, and Gustavo "Totó" Oliveira on drums. Their first album came out in 2001, featuring the song "Festa." That track became their biggest hit, pulling from samba and axé rhythms.
They put out several more albums through the 2000s, including Alegria in 2003 and Meu Ritmo in 2007. Another song, "Gingado," also got some attention. In 2002, there was some legal trouble over "Festa" and plagiarism claims, but it didn't stop the band from recording.
By 2013 they had released an album called Axé, which nodded back to their Bahian roots. The group's sound stayed grounded in those Brazilian styles, even as they worked within pop formats.
