Archive material and source history

Toty is a Brazilian group that formed in Campinas in the early 1990s. The lineup included vocalist Edu Guedes, guitarists Alessandro Brandão and Vitor Prestes, bassist Mário Arruda, and drummer Cláudio Chagas. Their first album came out in 1998, simply titled "Toty." That record had the song "Melô de Maria Júlia," which caught on quickly and became a national hit.

They followed that with albums like "Vamo Tocar" in 2000 and "Toty ao Vivo" in 2002. Their sound mixed pop, rock, and reggae, and later records brought in touches of funk and soul. Other tracks like "Melô de Gata Fugitiva" and "Melô de Jane" kept their profile up through the 2000s.

In 2002, Toty got tangled in a lawsuit over "Melô de Maria Júlia." Another Brazilian artist, Chico César, claimed they had plagiarized his work. The case was eventually dismissed, but it hung around for a while. Some of their lyrics and performances also drew criticism from conservative corners, though they kept playing and recording.
