Toy Horses formed in Minneapolis around 2003, with singer-songwriter Amber Rubarth and Ben Ianke working together initially. Their self-titled debut album came out in 2005 and included the song 'Flowers,' which became their best-known track.
After that first record, they put out several more albums including 'Northern Lights' in 2007 and 'Fear Not' in 2009. The band's lineup has shifted over time, with Rubarth remaining the constant presence on vocals and guitar.
There were some difficult periods, including Rubarth and Ianke's divorce in 2008 and a legal dispute with their former label Sony Music around 2012. Through those changes, Rubarth took on more of the songwriting responsibilities herself.
