Background notes

Archive material and source history

Toy Love formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1978 with Chris Knox on vocals and guitar, Alec Bathgate on guitar, Mike Dooley on bass, and Paul Kean on drums. Their debut single '1978' came out the following year, and they put out a self-titled album in 1980. The band broke up in 1981.

Their songs like 'Ain't It Nice?' and 'Don't Ask Me' had a raw, melodic punk sound that stood out in the local scene. They recorded another album called 'Cuts' in 1983, after they'd already split up.

Toy Love got back together for some shows in 2000. Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate kept working together in The Tall Dwarfs.
