Toyshop formed in Leeds in the early 1990s with Martin Smith on vocals, Mark Burgess on bass, Nick Evans on guitar, Alan Brown on keyboards, and Peter Hill on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1994, and its lead single "Let's Go Dance" became an international hit with a straightforward dancefloor energy that connected with listeners.
After Smith left the band in 1996, Burgess and Evans started a project called The Motivators. The other members moved on to different groups: Smith formed Melys, Hill joined Gene, and Brown worked as a producer and songwriter. Toyshop released several more albums including Close to You in 1997 and Nightclub in 2000.
Songs like "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and "Everybody Crazy" kept their sound in the pop-rock lane with clear melodies and a direct approach. They didn't overcomplicate things, which might be why "Let's Go Dance" still turns up on playlists now and then.
