António José Brito, known as Tózé Brito, was born in 1940 in Alhos Vedros near Lisbon. He started performing in the early 1960s, appearing on television and radio programs. His first album, 'Canções que Eu Canto,' came out in 1965.
In 1970, Brito wrote 'Canção da Alegria,' which became one of Portugal's most popular songs. Its hopeful tone resonated during the period after the 1974 Carnation Revolution. Other songs like 'Depois de Ti' and 'Eva' also found audiences.
Brito's career was interrupted in 1976 when he was arrested and imprisoned on drug charges.
