TPM

TPM formed in the early 1990s in Rio de Janeiro's marginalized neighborhoods, with founding members MC Carol, Negra Li, and Sista Carol. They started as female rappers working in a male-dominated scene, facing skepticism but pushing through with music that addressed social issues affecting women in their communities.

Their sound mixed hip-hop, funk carioca, and samba rhythms, giving their messages about poverty, violence, and sexual exploitation a distinctive Brazilian pulse. Songs like 'Andamos Todas Iguais' and 'Preciso Te Pedir Desculpas' became anthems of female solidarity, straightforward in their delivery but resonant in neighborhoods where those themes hit close to home.

They released albums steadily through the 1990s and early 2000s, including 'Só as Poderosas' in 1995 and 'A Vida É um Sopro' in 1998. Member changes happened over time, Negra Li left in 2004 to go solo, and new voices like Adda Diolla and DJ Drika joined.

TPM's work found listeners because it spoke plainly about real struggles. They didn't craft a polished studio sound so much as channel the rhythms and concerns of their streets, making music that felt immediate rather than calculated for broad appeal.
