They drew from industrial acts like Throbbing Gristle and Einstürzende Neubauten, as well as the techno and rave culture that was starting to take shape at the time. Their debut album 'Control' came out in 1988, built around pulsing synths and distorted guitars.
Lords' lyrics dealt with sexuality, violence, and social commentary, often in graphic language. That, along with her background as a former adult film star, made the band a target for conservative critics and kept their music off most radio and television.
Songs like 'Fallen Angel' and 'Father's Field' carried that confrontational tone forward. The band's stage presence was flamboyant, and they seemed more interested in challenging norms than in smoothing things over for wider acceptance.
