A Bristol pioneer who turned trip-hop into something intimate and unsettling.
For a sense of his sound, start with Ponderosa or Ice Pick. They frame that mix of experimental beats and lyrical unease he's known for.
Tricky helped define trip-hop on Massive Attack's Blue Lines, but his own sound quickly got darker. His 1994 debut Maxinquaye, with songs like Ponderosa, mixed experimental beats with a claustrophobic atmosphere. He never settled into being a genre figurehead, instead creating a series of mood pieces that feel both intimate and unsettling.
He came out of Bristol in the early 1990s, first appearing on Massive Attack's Blue Lines. His solo work moved into darker territory, from Maxinquaye to later albums like Knowle West Boy, each resisting easy genre labels. He often worked with vocalist Martina Topley-Bird, whose voice contrasted with his murmured delivery.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
