Editor's note

Trio Nordestino's forró anthems from Brazil's Northeast

A 1960s trio whose songs about migration and rural life reached a national audience.

Start with 'Sobradinho' to hear their breakthrough. 'Naquele São João' and 'O Assalto' show their knack for everyday stories.

They gave voice to the rural Northeast with songs that felt like local news. 'Sobradinho' became an anthem for migrants settling in Brasília's shantytowns. Their straightforward lyrics and rhythms connected with audiences far beyond the festivals where they started.

Zé Marcolino, Humberto Teixeira, and João do Vale formed the trio in the 1960s, playing local festivals. The 1973 album 'Sobradinho' brought them national attention. They kept recording through the 1970s, with Humberto Teixeira leaving in 1980.

Trio Nordestino formed in the 1960s with Zé Marcolino on vocals and guitar, Humberto Teixeira on backing vocals and accordion, and João do Vale on bass. They played local festivals in Brazil's Northeast, developing a sound that connected with rural audiences through straightforward lyrics and rhythms.

In 1973, working with producer Waldick Soriano, they recorded the album "Sobradinho." The title track became a kind of anthem about migrants settling in Brasília's shantytowns, and it gave the trio national attention. Other songs like "Chililique" and "O Neném" also became part of their repertoire.

They kept recording through the 1970s, putting out albums like "Forró de Primeira" in 1975 and "O Forró do Zé Marcolino" in 1977. Humberto Teixeira left the group in 1980.
