Editor's note

Trio Virgulino, the forró band from Campina Grande

A Brazilian trio known for songs like 'Que Nem Jiló' and a sound rooted in northeastern tradition.

For a quick sense of their style, try 'Que Nem Jiló' or 'Forró Dos Infernos S.A.', both have that driving, danceable feel they're known for.

They started as Trio Pé de Serra in the late 1990s, then renamed themselves after the bandit Lampião in 2002. Their first album, 'Forró do Trio Virgulino,' included hits like 'Preciso do seu Sorriso.' Songs like 'Que Nem Jiló' kept their forró rhythms alive through lineup changes and controversies.

The group formed in Campina Grande with Flávio José on accordion, Luiz Gonzaga on triangle, and Beto Hortis on zabumba. They changed their name in 2002 and released their debut album that same year. Luiz Gonzaga died in 2016, but the trio's recordings continue to circulate.

Trio Virgulino started as Trio Pé de Serra in Campina Grande, Paraíba, in the late 1990s. The group had Flávio José on accordion and vocals, Luiz Gonzaga on triangle and vocals, and Beto Hortis on zabumba and vocals. Their first album, "Forró do Trio Virgulino," came out in 2002. Songs like "Preciso do seu Sorriso" and "Pequenininha" became popular.

In 2009, the trio faced criticism for using a racial slur in a song, which they later removed from their set. Luiz Gonzaga died in 2016.
