Tristeza do Jeca

Tristeza do Jeca formed in the rural São Paulo area around the mid-1980s, with singer-songwriter Marcelo Camelo, bassist Bruno Medina, and drummer Rodrigo Amarante. They worked through early financial struggles, building a following through live shows before their 1993 debut album 'Azulão' brought them wider attention. The title track became a signature song for the band.

Their music often gets described with terms like 'sadcore' or 'emo,' but it pulls from folk, country, and rock as well. Songs like 'A Terceira Margem do Rio' and 'Bye, Bye, Brasil' show their tendency toward melancholic ballads and introspective lyrics. They released several albums through the 1990s, including 'Mapa' in 1996 and 'Exército de um Homem Só' in 1999.

The band's lineup stayed fairly consistent, with Camelo, Medina, and Amarante at the core, sometimes joined by guitarists like Tomaz Lima and Marcus Preto. They developed a loyal audience in Brazil's alternative rock scene, though some critics found their material too consistently downbeat. Their catalog includes seven studio albums in total.
