Background notes

Archive material and source history

Tru was a Houston hip-hop trio active in the late 1990s and early 2000s, made up of C-Note, K-Rino, and D.U.N.N. They put out their first album, "Tru 2 da Game," in 1999. A track from it, "I'm Bout It, Bout It," is one of the songs people still remember them by.

Their music had a straightforward, grounded feel. Other songs like "Christmas In The Ghetto," "Livin' Like A Hustler," and "Another Day, Another Dollar" give a sense of their style, direct storytelling over beats that weren't overly polished. They released several more albums after their debut, including "The Return of the Tru" in 2000 and "Tru Reality" in 2002.

While they had a following, the group's run wasn't without some rough patches. They dealt with legal issues at times, and their producer DJ Screw passed away. They kept putting out music into the 2000s, with albums like "Back to the Lab" and "The Truth," but never quite broke through to the very top of the charts. For a certain slice of Houston rap fans in that era, though, their records held a place.
