Truck Turner was a blues band that formed in Chicago in the late 1960s, with guitarist Frederick "Sonic" Smith and drummer Willie "Be Bop" Johnson at its center. They signed with Stax Records and put out their self-titled debut album in 1970. The following year, their second album 'Who Am I' gave them their most recognizable song, built around Smith's introspective lyrics and a hypnotic guitar riff.
Personal troubles and legal issues, including struggles with addiction and arrests, eventually pulled the band apart. They broke up in 1975. There was a brief reunion in the 1990s for some live shows, but Smith died in 1994. Johnson kept the name alive for performances until his own death in 2005.
