Tuomas Holopainen is the keyboardist and main songwriter for the symphonic metal band Nightwish. He started the band in 1996 with vocalist Tarja Turunen and bassist Emppu Vuorinen. Their first album, 'Angels Fall First,' came out the following year.
Nightwish's sound mixes heavy metal with classical and orchestral elements. In 2005, the band replaced Turunen with Anette Olzon, which caused some debate among listeners. Later albums like 'Dark Passion Play' and 'Imaginaerum' continued to feature Holopainen's detailed songwriting.
Outside of Nightwish, Holopainen has written solo material with titles like 'A Lifetime Of Adventure' and 'Glasgow 1877.' These songs share the narrative quality found in his work with the band.
