Background notes

Archive material and source history

Tupi e Nagô formed in 1994 with Berilo Sonda on vocals and guitar, Kadimba on berimbau and percussion, Nivaldo Ornelas on bass, and Paulo Santos on drums. They started out playing small venues while working on a sound that mixed indigenous and African rhythms with contemporary Brazilian music.

Their song "Banho de Ervas" got some attention when radio stations wouldn't play it because of references to herbal use. It's still one of their better-known tracks, along with "Lua Ê" and "Marará." They put out albums fairly regularly through the 2000s and into the 2010s, including Batuque de Umbanda in 1999 and A Rota do Tambor in 2014.

They kept playing shows and recording, and their music found an audience that appreciated the blend of traditional percussion and more modern arrangements. The group's lineup stayed consistent for most of their run, which gave their recordings a recognizable feel.
