Background notes

Archive material and source history

Tupimasala formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1973, with guitarist and vocalist Lobão as a central figure. The band's name played on the indigenous Tupinambá tribe and the Portuguese word for "bad," which gave a hint of their attitude. Other members included Oswaldo Montenegro on bass, Adherbal Fortes on drums, and Fátima Guedes on vocals.

In 1975, they released "Amélia Quer Ser Rafaela," a song about a character seeking freedom that became popular despite government censorship. Other tracks like "Ana" and "Caos Romano" showed their range.

Tupimasala put out three albums and toured Brazil, building a following with live shows that felt urgent for the time. Their work didn't fit neatly into categories, which might be why it still gets mentioned when people talk about that era's music.
