Tupy de Brás de Pina formed in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1970s with Jorge Portela on lead vocals and percussion, Paulo César Feital on vocals and guitar, and Luiz Carlos Proto on vocals and bass. The group included Niltinho on vocals and percussion, Jorge João on saxophone, Darcy on trumpet, and Wagner Tiso on piano and keyboards.
Their 1973 song "Assim Dança o Brasil" became widely known, and they released albums like "Assim Dança o Brasil" in 1975 and "Brasil de Todos os Sambas" in 1976. They worked in a style that mixed samba with funk and soul elements, sometimes called pagode.
Some listeners questioned their approach, but their music found an audience with songs that touched on national themes. They recorded "Riquezas Áureas de Nossa Bandeira" in 1976 and put out "O Samba É Nosso" the following year.
