Tutu com Tacacá formed in the early 1990s in Beira, Mozambique, taking their name from a traditional dish of beans and sauce. The group included vocalist Roberto Chitsondzo, guitarists Chico António and Justino Uamusse, bassist Celso Paco, drummer Rui Mazive, and percussionist Horácio Macuácua.
In 1997 they released 'Canto de Moçambique,' with lyrics by poet Mia Couto. The song became widely known in the country. Other tracks like 'Guarás' and 'Junta Minas e Pará' show their mix of regional styles.
Some traditionalists initially criticized their approach to Mozambican music. Their lyrics sometimes addressed social themes directly, which occasionally sparked debate.
