TWOAL is a Chicago duo made up of vocalist and guitarist Ian O'Neill and drummer and producer Joey Kern. They started working together in 2018, drawn to a shared interest in direct, unpolished songwriting. In 2021 they put out an EP called "Everything," which includes the track "Everythings."
Their music pulls from indie rock, folk, and electronic textures, built around O'Neill's inward-looking lyrics and Kern's spacious, atmospheric drum patterns. Songs like "Animal" and "Anjo" move at a hypnotic pace, with ethereal harmonies that give the recordings a quiet, lingering quality.
In 2022 the duo drew criticism for playing a festival associated with conservative politics, which surprised some fans given their previous support for progressive causes. They responded by saying they saw music as a way to start conversations across divides.
TWOAL's work tends to circle themes of love, loss, and searching, subjects they approach without much ornament. The songs on their EP, including "Conto As Horas" and "Histórias," feel less like statements and more like quiet observations.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
