The Farewell Party

Life takes more than it gives, I shout at the sky

Cause hyperbole tends to provoke a reply

Then I waited 'til I knew no rescue would come

Then I wrote one more half-hearted traveling song

We have indulged our sadness and made up regrets

But a trifle consoles what a trifle upsets

With a wandering charm and the sunset of youth

We still measure our lives out with coffee spoons

Are we just too easily pleased

Here with our pundits and sages

Witty and pretty and shitty and high

But don’t we get by

I moved from the center from that maddening crowd

But they put a Whole Foods at Gowanus canal

Curated coffee, that conquistador

Swallowed my grandpa's old auto parts store

If there's a season for everything under the Sun

I wonder what will be left when this one is done

Maybe the great voice will speak once again

Maybe we’ll turn off the lights and just let it in

I dreamt last night I was satisfied

I didn't feel lonely or boring or terrified

And the music was playing with everyone here

With the saints and the rebels and the true pioneers

But the merchants they followed with tinsel and gilt

And they stole the machines that the angels had built

And I woke with the strangest fear in my chest

The food I was hungry for doesn't exist
