Archive material and source history
Udo Jürgens was an Austrian-Swiss singer and composer who started as a pianist in Klagenfurt. His 1956 song '17 Jahr Blondes Haar' became a hit and established him in German-speaking music. He wrote and performed songs like 'Tante Emma' and 'Es Wird Nacht' over decades, releasing more than fifty albums without ever forming a permanent band.
His brother Manfred Jürgens often played guitar and arranged many of his songs. Udo Jürgens kept touring and recording into later years, with his music sometimes drawing attention for frank lyrics. He died in 2014 at eighty.
Some of his other songs include 'Superstar', 'Gefeuert', and 'Ich Sah Nur Sie'. He worked mostly in German, and his recordings remain familiar in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany.
