Ugly Heroes formed in Los Angeles in the late 1990s as a quartet with Jake Pitts on vocals and guitar, Matt Freeman on drums, Shaun Foley on bass, and Justin Richards on lead guitar. They put out their first album, 'No Mercy,' in 2001. The band released three more records after that: 'Here We Are' in 2004, 'Out of Control' in 2007, and 'Hope Dies Last' in 2011.
In 2004, they put out the song 'Desesperate,' which became their most recognized track. Other songs like 'Good Things Die' and 'Long Drive Home' also appear among their top material.
Their early shows sometimes drew mixed reactions, and there was a reported incident where Pitts had a public disagreement with a label executive after the first album came out. The band kept touring and recording through the 2000s, shifting from a rawer sound toward something more polished and experimental over those four albums.
