Ukrurku formed in Brazil around 2001 with Luciano Carvalho on vocals and guitar, Andre Gaio on guitar, and Rafael Crespo on drums. Their debut album 'A Primeira Pessoa Sempre Sou Eu' came out in 2003, followed by 'Noite' in 2005 and 'A Vida em Paz' in 2009. Carvalho entered a rehabilitation program in 2012, and the band released 'O Tempo é um Ladrão' in 2015.
Their songs like 'Rumo à extinção,' 'Suicídio,' and 'Beba seu próprio pus' explore themes of self-destruction and mental health with raw, confessional lyrics. Carvalho's writing drew some criticism for being perceived as narcissistic, particularly on the track 'A Primeira Pessoa Sempre Sou Eu.'
Ukrurku's music blends atmospheric arrangements with introspective rock that doesn't fit neatly into categories. They developed a following in Brazil's underground scene for this approach, with Carvalho's personal struggles and recovery influencing their later work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
