Es waren zwei Ritter, zwei Edle vom Dorf

Der eine war kahl und der and're voll Schorf

Der Kahle hieß Karl, war von listigem Mut

Der and're war blöde, man nannte ihn Knut

Sie sahen eines Tages die Tochter des Grafen

Wollten fortan ohne sie nicht mehr schlafen

Karl hat zum pickligen Knute gesagt:

„Die Gräfin ist reich und so gut wie intakt

Wir lieben sie beide, doch einer schaut zu

Und ich hab so den Eindruck, dieser eine bist du!"

Eifrig sprach Knut: „Wen sie liebt von uns beiden

Das muss die Comtessa wohl selber entscheiden!"

Sie kamen zum Grafen, und der fragte sein Kind:

„Willste den mit der Glatze oder den mit dem Grind?"

Sie sagte: „Für mich gibt's nur eins auf der Welt:

Ich will einen Recken, einen richtigen Held

Und der, der mich will zur Gemahlin erringen

Muss mir zuvor einen Drachenschwanz bringen!"

So zogen die Ritter zum Drachen vorm Tor

Und Karl sprach zu Knut: „Knut, geh du doch mal vor!

Geh mal hin zu dem Drachen und sprich ihn mal an,

Ich mach bloß meinen Schuh zu und komm' dann gleich ran."

Knut spielte häufig mit Käfern und Bienen

Doch konnte ihm diese Erfahrung nicht dienen

Der Drache focht tapfer, doch tapf'rer focht Knut

Und bald schwamm das Untier im eigenen Saft

Knut hieb ihm den Schwanz ab mit schwindender Kraft

Und lief damit zu Karl und rief: „Ich hab's geschafft!"

Setzt' sich am Brunnenrand, fühlt sich so schlapp

Da stieß ihn sein Freund in die Tiefe hinab

Doch Knut riss den Drachenschwanz mit sich hinwech

Da sprach Karl zu sich selbst: „Ach, ich hab auch ein Pech!

Ohne Schwanz keine Gräfin, ohne Gräfin kein Schlaf

Also, Knut, gib den Schwanz her! Komm Kleiner, sei brav!

Und das mit dem Brunnen war nicht so gemeint

Du musst mir vertrauen, denn ich bin doch dein Freund."

Knut gab ihm den Schwanz und bat: „Reich mir die Hand!"

Doch Karl war schon längst zum Schlosse gerannt

Die Gräfin rief: „Karl, dein Kampf war nicht vergebens!

Das ist der herrlichste Schwanz meines Lebens!"

Bis zur Hochzeit war Knut aus dem Brunnen heraus

Er brüllte: „Verrat!" - doch alles lachte ihn aus

„Wer glaubt heut' noch an Drachen ?! Ach, du bist nicht normal!"

Riefen alle, doch Knut sprach zornig zu Karl:

„Du find'st Deine Strafe, das weiß ich genau!"

Karl lachte und zog sich zurück mit der Frau

Und lebte noch hundert Jahrr glücklich mit ihr

Knutchen starb früh an einem Magengeschwür

Die Treue ist herrlich und bricht nicht so schnell

So singen schon Schiller und Sacha Distel

Die Freundschaft ist schön und reicht meist bis zuletzt -

Doch wird sie zuweilen auch stark überschätzt
