Ultra Peso formed in São Paulo in 1986 with André Jung on vocals and guitar, Serginho Herval on drums, Fernando Deluqui on bass, and Marcelo Nova on guitar and vocals. Their self-titled debut album came out the following year, anchored by the track 'Liberte a Alma, Liberte a Mente,' which became something of an anthem for Brazilian youth at the time.
Their music pulled from rock, punk, and samba, with lyrics that often dealt directly with social justice and personal freedom. Songs like 'O Peso Está No Som e Na Palavra' and 'Fariseus S/A' carried that same raw, provocative edge.
They released several more albums through the early 1990s, including 'Ultraleve,' 'Quem Não Corre, Voa,' and 'Metamorfose Ambulante.' By the mid-1990s, the members had begun pursuing solo work, and the band went on hiatus. They later reunited in the 2000s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
