Editor's note

Ultravox's synth-pop shift with Midge Ure

A British band that found its voice when John Foxx left and Midge Ure arrived.

For the early experimental side, check out 'Rockwrok'. For the synth-pop era that most people remember, start with 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes'.

When Midge Ure joined in 1980, he brought a different kind of songwriting that clicked with the UK charts. 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes' from the 'Vienna' album became a top 10 hit and helped define their place in the early '80s synth-pop wave. That track, along with 'Hymn' and 'Visions in Blue', gave them a sound that felt both emotional and electronic.

They started in 1977 with John Foxx on vocals, making experimental electronic music on their self-titled debut. After Foxx left, Midge Ure came in and the band's sound shifted toward more accessible synth-pop on albums like 'Vienna' and 'Rage in Eden'. They took a break in the late '80s, returned in the '90s, and put out 'Brilliant' in 2012, revisiting the style they were known for decades earlier.

Ultravox formed in the late 1970s with John Foxx on vocals, Billy Currie on keyboards, Chris Cross on bass, and Warren Cann on drums. Their first album, simply called 'Ultravox!', came out in 1977 and leaned into experimental electronics and synthesizers. The band's sound shifted when Foxx left in 1980 and Midge Ure joined, bringing his vocals and songwriting to tracks like 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes' from the 'Vienna' album.

That song became a UK top 10 hit and helped define their place in the synth-pop wave of the early '80s. They followed it with albums like 'Rage in Eden' and 'Quartet'. The lineup changed again when Chris Cross departed in 1983, leaving Currie and Cann as the consistent members through much of the band's activity.

After a break in the late '80s, Ultravox returned in the 1990s and put out records like 'Revelation'. They released 'Brilliant' in 2012, which revisited the synth-driven style they were known for decades earlier.
