Undercroft formed in 1984 with Simon Messenger on vocals, Jake Tovey on guitar, Mark Bewsher on bass, and Danny Rowe on drums. Their sound pulled from hardcore punk and metal, with Messenger's lyrics often targeting social injustice and authority. The song 'Spit At Them' became particularly known for its confrontational stance.
They released two studio albums, 'Burning for Revenge' in 1986 and 'No Time for Dancing' in 1988. Their performances and material, including tracks like 'Ruins Of Gomorrah' and 'Blackening The Sun,' led to bans from some venues and legal pressure, though they kept a following in the underground scene.
Undercroft disbanded in 1991. Their music, especially 'Spit At Them,' still gets mentioned in conversations about provocative 1980s underground bands.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
